Circa 1920s Five-Club
Starter Set #4
The great thing about hickory golf is that it doesn’t require more than a handful of clubs. Creating multiple shots with just a few clubs was the name of the game in the wood-shaft era and this five-club starter set will encourage you to play the game the way it was meant to be played.
These five clubs were made in the 1920s by a variety of American makers and have been fully refurbished for hickory golf play. All of the irons have been hand-selected for their optimal swing weight and characteristics for play and make a perfect minimal set of irons for someone interested in playing hickory golf with authentic clubs.
Notable clubs in this set include the jigger and flanged putter, which were both made by Wright & Ditson and feature stamped shafts.
Jiggers are among the most misunderstood hickory-era golf clubs. They’re often found with cut-down shafts and because of the shallow and lofted face, it’s assumed by most that they’re chipping clubs. In actuality, jiggers were originally designed to be played with longer shafts (around 38-inch play length) as mid-range approach clubs and the shallow face was designed to get the ball up in a hurry over trouble. The traditional loft of a jigger was around 30 degrees with 38-inch play length, and the example in this set matches those original specs well.
The notable aspect of the flanged putter is its swing weight, which is a very substantial and comfortable D1 at 35-1/4-inch play length. It’s difficult to find hickory era putters with both good swing weight and a loft compatible with faster greens.
