Wulff “1815 Series”
Premium Putter

The Wulff 1815 Series is a premium line of long-nose clubs made from visually striking materials. They celebrate the era when long-nose clubs were elevated from functional implement to fine art thanks to the contributions of the best club makers of the time such as Douglas McEwan of Musselburgh and Hugh Philp of St. Andrews. Head timbers are generally apple, Bradford pear, or figured exotic woods, and the shafts are hand-carved using the tools and techniques of 15th-century bow makers, who were the original club makers.

This particular Wulff 1815 putter is an original design inspired by the characteristics of clubs being made in the early 1800s. Putters in that era were just beginning to take on the more graceful and elegant curves we associate with those made in the middle of the 19th century, and were a bit wider on the crown and deeper in the face with a mostly parallel relationship between the top line and sole. The wider crown also makes these putters much heavier than the daintier examples Philp would eventually be making by the 1840s.

This head is made from Bradford pear and features a spalted maple “horn” on the leading edge of the sole rather than the traditional ram’s horn. The weight on the back of the head is poured and hammered lead.

The shaft on this club is a knotty piece of hickory that has been hand-carved in the bow maker tradition with draw knife and shave horse.

The grip is deer hide, smooth-side out, on top of a felt under listing that’s secured to the top of the shaft in traditional fashion with a bent nail.
